Podfic: Ryan Ross, Wedding Planner [PG-13]
all right by me
coriande
It makes me sad that I can only meander my way into a fandom three years after its heyday when nobody wants to talk about it anymore.  Tear.  Eyebrow.  At any rate, there's lots of great stuff bandom's left on the internet I can scavenge and read, and here's some of it.  This is a 2oo7 fic by the brillant adellyna , and she very kindly let me record it though she'd never heard of the weirdness that is podfic.

Without further ado.

Title: Ryan Ross, Wedding Planner; Or, What We Do Is Love.
Author: adellyna [Original Text Here]
Length: 1:o6:12
Format: MP3 [Download Here]
Pairings: Jon/Spencer, Ryan/Brendon
Rating: PG
Summary: This is the thirteenth gay couple Ryan has rejected in the last seven months.  "They're really nice," Brendon says soothingly.

"Nice is great, really.  Is one of them nice and a woman?"

Rec: I've had this story saved for some time on my computer with the document name 'spencer and jon get married and it's not gross'.  Yes, Ryan Ross is a wedding planner and there's all the hilarity you'd expect from that bad joke premise, but there's a lot of really good, sweet stuff in the story too and it has an absolutely killer Spencer.  Seriously, I'd want him as a friend except I am afraid he and his ladybug-encrusted t-shirt would utterly disdain me.  It's warm, funny and unexpectedly smart.  So this is a rec as well as a recording.

Credit: where credit's due: obvious thanks to [info]adellyna for letting her lovely story be read aloud by a stranger, and to this dear boy, whose charming cover of Jim Croce's I Have To Say I Love You In A Song I pilfered as a stand-in for Brendon's vocals, as I can't sing for shit and shouldn't be permitted to try.  Also irrelevant thanks to the Beatles and the Dixie Chicks, who provided the closing and the opening music respectively.

My lisp is much more noticeable in this reading than I would ever have thought; but I figure if bandom can forgive Jon Walker, they can forgive me.  And Ryan Ross is weird to read due to his failure to ever inflect anything, even when he is laughing or crying.

I suspect the market for this is quite small, but it was a blast to read and I'll probably try again in future, so constructive reading criticism is heartily welcomed!

Currently downloading but am looking forward to it already for the following reasons:

1) I have a life-size soft spot in my heart for Spencer, and Jon/Spencer fics make me smile like a five year old.

2) I agree, the fanfic is lovely and sweet and funny and everything that a good fanfic should be.

Oh! It's finished downloading and the five seconds of it have already made a huge grin cover my face. :-)

<3
I'm that way about Jon, myself. But all the guys are so charming in this.
Let me know how it went if you like!

The smile on my face is from ear to ear after hearing it, oh my God. I almost cried during Brendon's song to Ryan. Something about hearing the music in the background while you read it made Brendon pretty much announcing that he's crazy in love with Ryan, all that more moving. Superb job!!

Smiles are good for everyone!

Aw, I was so pleased to find the Youtube cover of the song - the kid singing even sounds a bit like Brendon, I thought.

the link to the original fic says I'm not authorized to view it

Yeah, it's not mine to un-friendslock, unfortunately. But all you have to do is drop adellyna a line saying you'd like to read her fic. She's lovely and a great writer.

[OMG adorablosity in your icon by the way.]

I want you to know you made this fic sound better with your super charming accent :D

Oh, thanks so much! I know it's not exactly suited to Panic's personas. Heh.

MegaUpload says the file is not available. :-(

How odd. I just linked it up and it seemed to download fine.
Here's a direct link - d'you wanna try again?

That worked. Maybe MU doesn't like me any more than I like it—or, you know, was down briefly. :-)

Would you like a podbook?

Oh, I'm glad I didn't do it wrong.

I don't know, love. What's a podbook? [Cute icon, by the by.]

A podbook is an audiobook or m4b, which files in a separate area of iTunes than music and is automatically bookmarkable on an iPod. I make a cover as well.

Oh, wow! That sounds absolutely lovely, if you don't mind the time.

It's my fannish thing! Of course I don't mind. :-)

I'll post and link you asap.

Driveby icon love. They're so freakishly adorable.

I just got into Bandom a month or two ago, myself. Better late than never, I guess? *grin*

Thanks for the podfic! Can't wait to listen.

Hi! I found your podfic on the audiofic archive when searching for other bandom podfic (I make podfic too). I was listening on my way into work this morning, and I just had to come here and tell you before I'm even done listening how much I am loving this!

You are SO good at this! Your voice is lovely, and your inflections and intonations are really spot-on. It's a pleasure to listen to.

Want to hear something funny? I was talking with brimtoast today and told her that I'd found a new reader that I really like. When I told her your name, she freaked and said that she likes you so much too and that she'd already recommended that you record "Star Shaped" by passe_simple next! And I was like "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" because that would be amazing!

Annnnyway, all tangents aside, I am really enjoying this, and I hope that you make more podfic. I hope it's all right if I friend you so that I can keep up with your new work. &hearts

Aw, that's so sweet of you to say! As someone who'd previously confined my read-aloud experiences to the kids I babysit and my cat, I'm always a little insecure about my reading voice, so it's nice to have positive feedback.

If you talk to brimtoast again, you can let her know I'm actually about halfway through recording Star Shaped (I hadn't read it before her recommendation, but it is so lovely. Sigh), but it's long. Would it be better to post it in chunks or all in one big file, I wonder?

Do you have any particular podfic you'd rec? I haven't heard much except for FayJay's amazing work (that girl leaves me in awe), but I'm going to check yours out now <3.

Well, you must banish your insecurity, because you are fucking fabulous at it, girl! I mean it. I wouldn't just say that, either. You can ask brimtoast: my standards are high. :)

OMG YAYYYYYYYYY! That is such excellent news! :D And let's see... well, there are different theories about how to post long podfic. I'm in the midst of recording a 40000 word one at the moment, and I decided to break it up into ten 4000-word chunks, each about 30 minutes long, figuring that I could always assemble it into one big file later if I wanted to. It's up to you, really.

I love FayJay too! She's very good. Well, anything by brimtoast is great - she archives all of her podfic at podklb in case you didn't know that already. Another really good podfic is this one by aphelant:

It's a Skins one. Not sure if you're into that show or not, but it's a really well-done podfic. I'll see if I can think of any others. And thanks for checking mine out too! <3

I'm actually about halfway through recording Star Shaped

\o/!

Just so you know, I've started working on the prequel to Star Shaped (Forever, Now), which will take me approximately the rest of my life to finish, but yay! Our recordings can be friends and frolic hand in hand through meadows and other delightful things.

Aww. I read Forever, Now when you recced Star Shaped to me, and it is all kinds of fabulous. My recording will surely look up to yours as a big sister figure of some type, or possibly a Messianic idol.

Gah, I'm trying to iron out an American accent for this story (it just seemed to demand it much more than the wedding planner one), and as a result the first hour of recording is all back-and-forthy between leftover Kiwi stuff and Canadian. But I don't wanna re-record it! [/whine]

I am pretty sure it is not Messianic idol quality. I am fairly happy with it, though, which is cheering. I have recorded through part 3 so far, which I would be pleased with if it weren't part 3 OF ELEVEN JFC. And they get longer as they go.

FWIW, I think trying to do accents other than your natural one is almost never worth what you lose in nuance from being able to navigate your normal speaking voice (if that sentence even makes sense). And most listeners are super-forgiving of accents. So if you hadn't started to record yet and were asking my opinion, I'd say don't bother trying to do an American accent.

But I know how much re-recording sucks. I totally hate doing it. So, yeah. I do not have particular wisdom, but buckets of sympathy, no matter which way you decide.

Go, go! I will be your marathon-read cheering section
- waves pompoms -

I think the solution I've come to works pretty well. An American English accent isn't a huge stretch for me, since I live in Canada now (I grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand), but my accent is naturally closer to what's generally referred to as British. So all the third person narrative stuff is in my normal voice, but I'm doing an American-esque accent for the dialogue. Hopefully it will turn out okay.

Oh, yes, that does sound like a good compromise. :)

if you want more specific cheerleading, I would be down for a swap of our progress-so-far at some point.

I just finished listening to this and I just wanted to say I enjoyed your performance a lot!

Ah, thank you so much! One of the nice things about the internet is that the things we make hang around for so long after we make them.

The link for the podfic isn't working for me, is there any way you could repost it?
